Pantaria: submersive gamification

Pantaria is an immersive gamification I have created for use in my second-year classes. Pantaria is a mash-up of the mobile game Clash Royal, the famous board game Risk and a healthy dose of fantasy roleplaying.

I introduced it last year and it was quite a success. Pupils were really immersed into the whole fantasy setting and their performances and especially their motivation were definitely improved. Sadly Covid 19 threw a spanner in the works and I had to drop it for now, but it would be great to revisit it.

Summary
In short, Pantaria takes places in a fantasy world where pupils are divided into clans. These clans battle for supremacy over the land of Pantaria. Each week pupils gain gold coins for participating in challenges and quests. They can then use these gold coins to recruit mercenaries (each with their own special abilities) who will fight in their risk-style dice battles. All in a bid to conquer as many provinces as they can and be crowned the victors.

Quests and Challenges

The meat and bones of the gamification are of course the challenges and quests. Challenges are smaller, simpler activities like doing assignments/homework, short weekly retrieval practice tests, doing their Edpuzzle and Readtheory assignments, speaking assignments, updating their clan diaries, etc. Quests are usually more involved and creative assignments and have an immersive background story.

The actual battles take place once a week, taking about 10-15 minutes in total.
